El Dorado, population 13,000, serves as the gateway to the scenic Flint Hills. A visitor can relive the Kansas oil boom and encounter the Flint Hills at the Butler County History Center. Fine art galleries, sculptures and exhibits, upscale niche shops, delicious dining and 8,000 acres of liquid fun at El Dorado Lake make a trip to Butler County’s largest city and County Seat very memorable.

Kansas Oil Museum and Butler County History Center

Farming, Ranching and Oil in the Kansas Flint Hills. 10 acres featuring an Oil Boom town, vintage oil equipment, Model T trucks and farm machinery. Inside exhibits on history and science. Large gift shop, tourist information. Open year round! Admission charged. Bus and RV parking.

El Dorado Lake and State Park

Since 1981. The 8000 surface acres of water and 1100 campsites offer recreational activities. Camping includes full hook-up sites and primitive sites or full amenity deluxe cabins. Campgrounds offer laundry facilities, a bait shop and general store (Bluestem 4 Bait), and wireless internet.
Recreation opportunities available plus a variety of hiking trails, bicycle trails, horse trails, and a geocache course.
Quality year around fishing, including trout fishing during the winter months in the Walnut River below the dam. Boating facilities include the full service Shady Creek Marina and the Walnut Valley Sailing Club.

Freedom Memorial

A brick path memorial honoring over 1400 veterans, current members of the US armed forces, and those who served on the home front.
A six and one-half foot bronze eagle, “Sovereign Wings,” is the centerpiece of the memorial. It rests majestically on top of a large limestone and brick base. A second memorial walk features the Statue of Liberty and our flag.

Historic Butler County Courthouse

This beautiful 1908 Romanesque Style Courthouse was conceived by the famous 19th century architect, George P. Washburn. Features a clock tower and a goddess of Justice statue on the front pointed roof.
